Which female won the first ever track gold medal and when/ where /what distance?

Betty Robinson, of the U.S. made history in 1928 in Amsterdam when she became the first woman ever to win an Olympic medal (gold) in track and field. The "fastest woman in the world" triumphed in the 100-meter run while she was a 16-years old.   In 1931, Schwartz suffered a broken leg in an airplane accident, but she battled back to also win a gold medal in the women's 400-meter relay at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin.
